Designed specifically for absolute beginners, this course provides a solid introduction to crochet and transitions you from the very first loop on your hook to the creation of a stunning, lifelike butterfly or moth sculpture.  This course delivers 18 hours of tuition in a small group, to help you gain confidence in the art of crochet.

Designed specifically for absolute beginners, this course provides a solid introduction to crochet and transitions you from the very first loop on your hook to the creation of a stunning, lifelike butterfly or moth sculpture.  This course delivers 18 hours of tuition in a small group, to help you gain confidence in the art of crochet.

Over six, three hour long Thursday morning workshops, you will join Charlie in a peaceful, supportive environment to master the foundation skills in the meditative art of yarn.  Choose to make either a stunning lifelike specimen with wire armature or a box framed piece of stunning art to brighten up your wall.

 

  • Weeks 1–2    (10 & 17 September – 10am to 1pm)
    Hook basics, tension control, and practicing the core stitches.
  • Weeks 3–4    (24 September & 8 October – 10am to 1pm)
    Introduction to shaping, increasing/decreasing, and starting your sculpture pieces.
  • Weeks 5–6     (15 & 22 October – 10am to 1pm)
    Detailed wing work, assembly, and finishing touches to bring your butterfly to life.

The course is £180 in total which is £30 per 3 hour session, of which there are 6 in this introduction to crochet course.  You will need to be able to attend them all.

Please note that there is an additional materials fee of £12 to be paid to tutor on the day, to cover the cost of materials including practice yarns, cotton yarn for your final creation, box frame or wire and ergonomic crochet hook.

Your tutor: Charlie Kenobi

Charlie Kenobi is a fibre artist and educator who believes that every stitch is a step toward inner calm. Since launching her business CalmKrafts in 2023, Charlie has gained recognition for her remarkably lifelike crochet and knit creations, ranging from charming gifts to lifelike Bonsai and Insect creations.


Charlie is a proud member of the Y Bwthyn 2025 art collective, with her collections available online and in-person at the Bay Gallery, Aberystwyth, and Rhiannon’s of Tregaron.

As a tutor for Aberystwyth University’s Lifelong Learning program, Charlie combines technical expertise with a gentle teaching style. Whether you are picking up a hook for the first time or looking to master realistic textures, her workshops are designed to help you find your “inner peace” through the meditative art of yarn and fibre.
