Finding Your Welsh Voice, One Conversation at a Time

Posted in Volunteering, Welsh languageTagged , , ,

For many people learning Welsh, the hardest step isn’t grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation. It’s finding the confidence to use the language in real-life situations.

That’s where our Welsh Conversation Walk comes in.

Every Thursday at 12:30pm, we bring together Welsh learners and fluent speakers for a relaxed walk, a hot drink and friendly conversation. There’s no classroom, no tests and no pressure. Just an opportunity to enjoy being outdoors while using Welsh in a supportive and encouraging environment.

A Space Where Everyone Belongs

One of the biggest barriers to learning any language is the fear of getting it wrong. Many learners worry about making mistakes, forgetting words or slowing down a conversation.

Our aim is to create a space where those worries can be left behind.

Everyone is welcome to participate at their own level. You might be taking your first steps beyond “Bore da” and “Diolch”, or you might be looking to become more confident holding a full conversation. Wherever you are on your Welsh journey, you’ll find people ready to encourage you.

There is no judgement about ability, and no expectation that learners should understand or contribute more than they feel comfortable with. We recognise that confidence grows through positive experiences, and that learning happens best when people feel relaxed and accepted.

Calling All Welsh Speakers

The group isn’t just for learners.

We’re also keen to welcome fluent and first-language Welsh speakers who would enjoy helping others discover and use the language. A friendly chat, a little patience and a willingness to include learners can make an enormous difference to someone’s confidence.

By joining us, fluent speakers help create opportunities for Welsh to be heard and spoken in everyday settings. They also play an important role in supporting the next generation of Welsh speakers.

Real Conversations, Real Confidence

Speaking a language in a lesson is one thing. Using it in everyday life is another.

Our weekly walks provide an opportunity for learners to experience Welsh in a natural setting, while knowing they are surrounded by people who understand they are learning. Conversations can be adapted to suit different abilities, allowing people to stretch themselves without feeling overwhelmed.

Whether you spend the walk listening, practising a few simple phrases or joining in longer discussions, every conversation helps build confidence.

A Walk, a Cuppa and Good Company

Before setting off, we’ll make drinks for everyone to take on the walk. Please bring a travel mug, and remember to dress appropriately for the weather and ground conditions, as paths can sometimes be muddy or uneven.

Tea, coffee (including decaffeinated options) and herbal teas are available, along with milk and oat milk.

We ask for a small donation to help cover the cost of refreshments.
