Spend a creative day making your own Japanese-style rice bag, inspired by traditional komebukuro, these cloth bags were once used in Japan for carrying and gifting rice.
In this hands-on workshop you’ll learn how to construct a beautiful and practical fabric bag with its distinctive box shape and drawstring closure. Your finished bag can be used for storing craft projects, carrying everyday items, as a gift bag, or simply enjoyed as something unique that you have made yourself.
With guidance throughout the day, you’ll work through the different stages of constructing your bag and practice your sewing skills along the way.
This workshop is suitable for anyone with basic sewing-machine skills. You should be comfortable setting up, threading and using your own sewing machine with basic straight and zig-zag stitches, but you do not need advanced sewing experience.
Debbie can provide 1:1 sessions before the course if you want advice on how to set up and master the basics with your sewing machine. Please contact us for details.

All the fabric required to make your Japanese rice bag will be provided, pre-cut into the required sizes and available in a variety of patterns and colours.
There is an additional £10 materials charge, payable in cash to the tutor on the day.
You’ll leave at the end of the day with your own handmade Japanese rice bag and the knowledge to make more at home.
This project is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, administrated and supported by the Cynnal y Cardi Team for Ceredigion County Council.
