6 places available

As the season draws in, and we start to think about cosy nights in by the fire, come and learn how to process firewood for the cold winter months.

What may seem like a basic skill on the surface is full of nuance such as types of wood and how they burn; what makes good kindling and how to prepare it; how to tell how dry your wood is and what you can do to speed up seasoning; what axes to use with what size wood and how to chop without causing yourself a mischief.

We’ll also look at the Nordic art of stacking and types of wood store, from home made to shop bought. We’ll even discuss the different methods of fire lighting so you’ll no longer be bent over in front of the fire, huffing and puffing to get it going.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own axe along (if you have one) and we will spend some time learning how to sharpen them before putting them to use.

Remember you’ll warm yourself twice with this course, once chopping and once burning.

Points to note:

  • The course involves practical, moderately physical activity and is predominantly an outdoor course, so please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy, closed toe boots.
  • No prior experience is necessary as we will start with the basics, including safe axe handing and chopping techniques.
  • Gloves will be provided, but you may bring your own if you prefer.  Please bring your own eye protection if you wish to use it.
  • Please bring your own axe to learn how to sharpen it if you have one.  Please let us know if you’d like to use one of ours instead in the notes when booking.
  • Refreshments are provided.
