This three day course is designed to improve your knowledge of traditional ‘stake and strand’ basketry by spending a day focusing on each section of the basket in detail.

The aim will be to make a variety of smaller baskets, with the opportunity to practice and repeat different techniques along the way. Some previous experience of basketry is ideal.

This course is now fully booked but we are operating a waiting list and may run additional dates if there is sufficient interest. Please email info@denmarkfarm.org.uk to add your details to the waiting list.

Day One – BASES
On the first day we will be exploring different techniques in making round and oval bases. We will look at a variety of different centre structures.

Day Two – SIDES
On the second day you can choose which of your bases you would like to turn into baskets, with an aim to explore the different possibilities in constructing the siding and looking at ways to achieve a neater result.

Day Three – BORDERS AND HANDLES
On the morning of the last day we will be comparing trac, rod and plated borders. You can practice these on the baskets that you are making and also make test borders from jigs. In the afternoon we will do handles and explore bow handles on shoppers and roped handles.

All materials and tools will be provided, however there is an additional fee of £40 for the large quantity of materials used to create your multiple baskets. Please bring this in cash and pay to the tutor on the day.

Fee: £195 (includes tuition and hot drinks throughout the day)

Tutor: Jane Welsh

“I had forgotten pretty much everything about basket weaving and I took part in this workshop to remind myself so that I can continue at home. I now can continue! The teaching was very good, Jane was observant, informative and careful to ensure reasonably high quality results. Denmark Farm is a top venue with great facilities”. Blue Morgan

“Thank you so much for arranging the basket making course. Jane is an amazing and thoughtful teacher. She gives everyone her undivided attention and responds to what they want to do and their level. It is relaxing just to be with her and I learn so much. A big thank you! It was like a mini-holiday.” Jane Johns
