Event Type

A one day traditional willow weaving workshop in which we will be using a variety of natural willows to make a little posy basket.

This is a little round basket with bow handle, incorporating a traditional base, waled and randed sides and a simple rod border. Suitable for beginners to start learning the basics of basket making. A nice size for collecting posy’s or eggs or for children to play with.

You will be learning traditional ‘stake and strand’ basket making, using prepared basketry willow plus some grown at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre on the wetland system to add colour and texture.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners but if you’ve made a basket before and would like a refresher day this is a good opportunity.

Children aged 12+ are welcome, with an accompanying adult.

All tools and materials provided. If you have your own sharp secateurs and a knife, please bring them along.  Please wear warm old clothing.

Tutor: Jane Welsh

Jane is our guest tutor from Devon, usually visiting West Wales to teach at Denmark Farm twice a year. Jane is a very skilled basket maker and attentive teacher. Her knowledge and love of willow is inspiring. She will also have a range of her own baskets for sale at very reasonable prices.

See Jane’s website here.

“I had forgotten pretty much everything about basket weaving and I took part in this workshop to remind myself so that I can continue at home. I now can continue! The teaching was very good, Jane was observant, informative and careful to ensure reasonably high quality results. Denmark Farm is a top venue with great facilities”. Blue Morgan

“Thank you so much for arranging the basket making course. Jane is an amazing and thoughtful teacher. She gives everyone her undivided attention and responds to what they want to do and their level. It is relaxing just to be with her and I learn so much. A big thank you! It was like a mini-holiday.” Jane Johns
