A two day course to learn the basics of traditional ‘stake and strand’ basketry whilst making a practical oval basket.

This course will start with weaving a traditional willow oval basket base, but then students can choose to turn their base into a shopping or laundry basket or even a garden trug. You will be able to explore different weaves in the sides including the three rod wale, French or English randing, packing, finish with a rod border and a choice of handles. Shopping, picking beans or hanging out washing will be a pleasure for ever more!

This workshop is suitable for practical beginners but if you’d not woven with willow before you will need to keep your basket to a more modest size in order to complete it in time. If you’ve made a basket before and would like to extend your skills this is a great opportunity.

All tools and materials provided. If you have your own sharp secateurs and a knife, please bring them along. Please wear warm old clothing.

Tutor: Jane Welsh

Jane is an experienced basket maker and attentive teacher. Her knowledge and love of willow is inspiring. She will also have a range of her own baskets for sale at extremely reasonable prices.

Workshop Fee: £120 per person

NB. There is an additional £20 per person for materials, to be paid in cash on the day.
