IMG_8682IMG_8684A one day willow basket weaving workshop in traditional ‘stake and strand’ basket making, using prepared basketry willow plus some grown at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre on the wetland system to add colour and texture. You will learn to make a basket with a Portcullis centre, based on the Irish potato scibs, with waling for the sides and a rod border.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners but if you’ve made a basket before and would like a refresher day this is a good opportunity. If you’d like to go on and develop your skills further you may be interested in the following two consecutive two day workshops: Willow Basket Weaving – Square Work and Willow Basket Weaving – Make a Log Basket.
Children aged 9+ are welcome, with an accompanying adult.
All tools and materials provided. If you have your own sharp secateurs and a knife, please bring them along.  Please wear warm old clothing.

Tutor: Jane Welsh

Jane is an experienced basket maker and attentive teacher. Her knowledge and love of willow is inspiring. She will also have a range of her own baskets for sale at very reasonable prices.

“I had forgotten pretty much everything about basket weaving and I took part in this workshop to remind myself so that I can continue at home. I now can continue! The teaching was very good, Jane was observant, informative and careful to ensure reasonably high quality results. Denmark Farm is a top venue with great facilities”.

“Thank you so much for arranging the basket making course. Jane is an amazing and thoughtful teacher. She gives everyone her undivided attention and responds to what they want to do and their level. It is relaxing just to be with her and I learn so much. A big thank you! It was like a mini-holiday.”
