Weave a Rush Hat

Date(s) - 13 Jul 2022 until 14 Jul 2022
10:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Come and weave your own beautiful made to measure sun hat out of rush, a soft and aromatic material.

weave rush hatWe will start by weaving a small mat to get into the feel of working with rush and then progress to making the hat for which we will use check weave, pairing, waling and rod bordering. Previous experience of basketry is definitely recommended although practical beginners are also welcome.
rush weavingJane will gently guide you through the process and you will be able to weave your own beautiful and bespoke rush hat to wear home.

Rush is a wonderful material to weave with as it is softer and much gentler on the hands than willow.

We will be using rush harvested, from this year’s rush harvest in Somerset, only a few weeks before the course.
All tools and materials provided. Please wear warm old clothing.

Tutor: Jane Welsh

Jane is an experienced basket maker and attentive teacher. Her knowledge and love of willow and rush is inspiring. She will also have a range of her own baskets for sale at extremely reasonable prices.

“I had forgotten pretty much everything about basket weaving and I took part in this workshop to remind myself so that I can continue at home. I now can continue! The teaching was very good, Jane was observant, informative and careful to ensure reasonably high quality results. Denmark Farm is a top venue with great facilities”. Blue Morgan

“Thank you so much for arranging the basket making course. Jane is an amazing and thoughtful teacher. She gives everyone her undivided attention and responds to what they want to do and their level. It is relaxing just to be with her and I learn so much. A big thank you! It was like a mini-holiday.” Jane Johns
