Learn to Spin on a Spinning Wheel ~ FULLY BOOKED

Learn to Spin on a Spinning Wheel ~ FULLY BOOKED

In this workshop you will discover the joy of spinning fleece on a traditional spinning wheel, taught by an experienced spinner and teacher.

Learn to Spin using a Spinning Wheel, in a small group of just 2 participants – to allow plenty of time for one to one support.

Spinning wheels are provided or bring your own wheel. Please let us know in advance if you are bringing your own wheel.

Our plan for the workshop

  • Welcome
  • Looking at why the students have chosen to learn to spin
  • Explanation of fleece – choice, variety and how to prepare fleece for spinning.
  • Demonstration of the processes in beginning to spin and hands on learning.
  • Development of skills at the level of each student.
  • Exploration of the use of different styles of spinning wheels and different fibres.
  • The next stages – how to ply and how to wash skeins to ‘fix’ the twist in the yarn.
  • Questions and where to go from here…

Tutor: Amy Ford

My name is Amy and I run Sheepish Woollens from my small sheep farm in West Wales. I started spinning over a decade ago, and since then have taught groups and individuals and provided demonstrations at many events including for the staff at Adam Henson’s  farm and at Wool Days and Open Farm Sunday events.I love the alchemy of fleece to yarn and am a huge enthusiast of both Drop Spindle Spinning and Wheel Spinning and this love ties in with my love of my sheep – I now have a flock of over thirty having started with just three 7 years ago. I particularly love the natural diversity in colour and texture of our native sheep breeds but I will happily spin many many other fibres.I am passionate about teaching Spinning as it’s such a fabulous, mindful craft with an incredible history. Whether you have sheep of your own and long to spin their fleece or would like to learn to spin the myriad of ready processed fleece now available I will work through each process with you.. with patience and good humour!I hope you can join me for this course and learn to spin. ‘
