Spend a day discovering the art and amazing science of shrink pot carving.
Day 3 of a three day weekend of Woodcrafts.
The process is to take a green wood log and hollow out the centre, fit a dry wooden base and let the pot dry and shrink to create a sealed and strong container just like the vikings did on their long boats!
This Shrink Pot Carving course is a great way to get started with woodworking, covering choosing materials, using tools safely, carving techniques, and drying and finishing. You’ll leave with the skills and knowledge needed to start carving, and with your own hand made shrink pot or two!
This course covers everything you need to know and do to create a stylish wooden shrink pot to take away with you. It will give you the skills and confidence to start carving at home – a great way to unwind and to create your own unique, low impact gifts, ornaments and functional items. Suitable for anyone who would like to be able to carve a wooden shrink pot from start to finish. Ideal for complete beginners or budding green wood workers looking to develop their skills.
A chance to reconnect with the outdoors and switch off from all of life’s little stresses.
What to bring:
Closed toe footwear, practical and warm clothes, humour and enthusiasm.
All tools and materials will be provided.
Tutor: Neil Hopkins of Forge Ways is the tutor for your green woodworking courses.
Neil moved to the Dyfi Valley in 2007 near Machynlleth to work as a Renewable Engineering Project Manager and to live a more sustainable way of life on a smallholding, nestled in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains. He has a passion for traditional skills and low impact ways of living, combined with a wealth of experience instructing in the outdoors. Neil has diverse qualifications and experience of arboriculture and green woodworking. He can often be found amongst the mountains as a member of his local mountain rescue team.
He has developed his skills using traditional methods and hand tools such as shave horse, pole lathe, froe, axe, crook knife and creates both beautiful and practical items from wood gathered locally.
Neil delivers courses with a calm competency, enabling students to learn skills in a relaxed learning environment that is both mindful and along permaculture principles.
