Rush Weaving – Little Square Bag ~1 Place Left

Rush Weaving - Little Square Bag ~1 Place Left

A one day workshop learning the gentle craft of weaving with rush. You will take home a sweet and useful little square rush bag.

Little Rush BagTo make this lovely little rush bag we will be working off a wooden block and using check weave, waling, pairing, a simple rod border and twisted handles.
The finished dimensions will be roughly 180mm W x 200 H x 50mm D.  The rush will be from the Somerset Levels.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and if you have done some rush weaving before you may be able to experiment more with the design.

rush weavingJane will gently guide you through the process and you will be able to weave your own beautiful and bespoke rush bag to take home.

Rush is a wonderful material to weave with as it is softer and much gentler on the hands than willow.

We will be using rush harvested, from this year’s rush harvest in Somerset, only a few weeks before the course.

All tools and materials provided. Please wear warm old clothing.

Tutor: Jane Welsh

Jane is our guest tutor from Devon, usually visiting West Wales to teach at Denmark Farm twice a year. Jane is a very skilled basket maker and attentive teacher. Her knowledge and love of rush and willow is inspiring. She will also have a range of her own baskets for sale at very reasonable prices.

See Jane’s website here.

“I had forgotten pretty much everything about basket weaving and I took part in this workshop to remind myself so that I can continue at home. I now can continue! The teaching was very good, Jane was observant, informative and careful to ensure reasonably high quality results. Denmark Farm is a top venue with great facilities”. Blue Morgan

“Thank you so much for arranging the basket making course. Jane is an amazing and thoughtful teacher. She gives everyone her undivided attention and responds to what they want to do and their level. It is relaxing just to be with her and I learn so much. A big thank you! It was like a mini-holiday.” Jane Johns
