An essential course for anyone who keeps chickens and occassionally needs to be able humanely dispatch a bird due to sickness or injury or those keeping a small flock for meat production.
Participants will be taught how to humanely dispatch one free-range chicken and then shown how to pluck and gut the bird.
You will learn the plucking and gutting process in a bright and airy classroom under the expert guidance of Lewis. You will go home with detailed instructions to reinforce what has been learnt on the day.
The chicken dispatch course will be held in small groups to ensure all participants are supported throughout the whole process and given assistance where needed.
Tutor: Lewis Wescott of DrChickenCourses.co.uk
Lewis (also known as Dr Chicken) is a small animal vet with a special interest in poultry. He studied for his BSc in Animal Science at Aberystwyth University and returns to Wales each year to host a weekend of chicken keeping courses. He travels the UK delivering pet owner education on the health and husbandry of backyard chickens, how best to care for them and has been lucky enough to give talks at The National Pet Show and BBC Gardeners’ World Live.
“Just want to say a huge thank you to Lewis for a very informative Dispatch, Pluck and Gut Course which my husband Dave attended yesterday – he thoroughly enjoyed it and learned so much – came home and was gutting chickens like a pro! Excellent course and highly recommended. Will be fantastic to be able to eat “home-grown” chickens from now on, no more supermarket rubbish! A must-do course for anyone keeping chickens for eggs too, gives you peace of mind and confidence to know what you are doing when dealing with ill hens. THANK YOU!”
