- Would you like to find out more about Earthworms and the New Zealand Flatworm?
- This is an introduction for people who want to find out more but have no or very little previous knowledge.
- There is no charge for the training but a donation towards the conservation work of the Shared Earth Trust would be appreciated.
During this session you will learn how to carry out the OPAL soil survey, looking at different species of Earthworms and carrying out basic soil tests.
As all gardeners know, Earthworms are very important for good quality soil and this survey is finding out more about their distribution in the UK. This information can help us understand the impact of invasive flatworm species. You will need to bring solid shoes that you can use a spade with, and outdoor clothing. All the equipment to do the survey will be provided.
Timetable
10am-11 am Introduction to the method for the OPAL soil survey
11am-12pm Hunting for worms, counting and identifying and carrying out basic soil tests.
The Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) network is a UK-wide citizen science initiative that allows you to get hands-on with nature, whatever your age, background or level of ability. The surveys explore the health of our soils and trees, the quality of our air and water, the distribution of invertebrates, the importance of hedges, and the ways in which we affect our climate.
