A one day course exploring the Electrical and Electronic Fundamentals of Micro-Generation.

Designed for people with a desire to implement practical micro-generation systems or those who wish to improve their knowledge of the fundamental principals behind such systems.

We will be covering the basic principles including the fundamentals of electricity and the electronics required to understand and implement small scale generation based on rotational generators (suitable for connection to windmills, waterwheels etc.)

 

 

 

 

 

The course will be mainly theoretical and cover the following topics:

  • What is electricity?
  • What is Voltage?
  • What is Current?
  • What is Power?
  • What is meant by AC and DC

 

  • Understanding Insulators
  • Understanding Conductors
  • Understanding Semi-conductors
  • Discrete electronic components
  • Resistors and resistance
  • The diode, its behaviour and uses
  • The transistor, its behaviour and uses

 

  • How can electricity be generated?
  • Brief overview of various generation methods
  • Photo-voltaic
  • Thermo-voltaic
  • Fuel cells (electro-chemistry)
  • Other more esoteric (Bio-electro generation, microbial fuel cell.)
  • Magnetic induction
  • Permanent magnets
  • Electro magnets
  • Pros and cons of the above with respect to home built Micro-Generation

 

  • To understand the limitations as well as the possibilities which make micro-generation viable we need to understand energy and its conversion from one form into another
  • Kinetic Energy
  • Potential Energy
  • Energy conversion loss
  • Electrical Storage
  • Usage of electricity generated
  • Practical winding coils and their interaction with magnets

Course notes will be supplied.

There will be some ‘Lab time’ learning to use Digital Multi-meters (DMM) to identify and measure the value of various components.

This course will be lead by Richard Bambrey BA MPhil. A member of the Institute of Physics and a Chartered Physicist.

This is the first in a series of thee one day courses on DIY Micro-Generation. An understanding of the topics covered in day one will be necessary for the following two days. Day two and three will take place on the following two days (14th and 15th July 2018).

Workshop Fee: £36

DMMs will be supplied for the Labs. If you like your DMM you can purchase it for £5 at the end of the day.
