Identifying Butterflies, Day-flying Moths, Dragonflies and Damselflies (part of National Dragonfly Week 21st to 29th July 2018).
This bumper two-day course will teach you the key features and skills for identifying these spectacular native insects. Butterflies and moths are important pollinators of native, agricultural and garden plants. Dragonflies and damselflies are key wetland species, from garden ponds to rivers, lakes and marshes.
The course is suitable for amateurs, students and professionals – both beginners and those with some experience.
Saturday will focus on identifying butterflies and day-flying moths and their terrestrial habitats. On Sunday we will concentrate on dragonflies and damselflies of wetlands. Most field work will take place at Denmark Farm but if time allows we will also visit Cors Caron at Tregaron on the Sunday.
While we will focus on identification skills, a combination of indoor and outdoor sessions will also cover:
- Life cycles
- Current and future status and threats
- Habitat requirements
- Conservation and habitat management
- Wildlife gardening
- Identification and other learning resources
