It is time to get going and Grow Your Own delicious, nutritious veg in 2020. 

Our Grow Your Own programme is a series of nine short courses providing all the basic knowledge required to get growing at home. Our focus is growing vegetables whilst being mindful of nature.

kitchen gardenThis course is for those that want to learn how to directly sow seeds outdoors successfully. It covers how to prepare the soil prior to sowing, the right drill for the seed being sown and techniques used for seeds of different vegetables to ensure best success.

There is a classroom-based theory part to this course, as well as an outdoor practical section where you will be taken through the full process of sowing.

This course will equip you with the fundamental techniques of sowing vegetable seeds outdoors:

  • Theory – tilth required, types of drill, sowing techniques
  • Practical – drawing out drills, direct sowing in vegetable beds
  • Hands on, practical demonstrations
  • Suitable for growers of all levels

Please note: This course will involve outdoor demonstrations. Please come prepared for working in wet and cold weather. All tools and working gloves will be provided.

This is the second day in a series of two vegetable sowing courses. The first day (on Sunday 22nd March 2020) will focus on sowing vegetable seed under cover.

Tutor: Malcolm Berry ‘The Dreaded Gardener’

Led by experienced grower, Malcolm Berry. Malcolm Berry has been in professional horticulture for more than 20 years, working mostly with fruit and vegetables, including seven years in the double-walled garden at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. He has delivered courses for the Royal Horticultural Society and ‘Growing the Future/Tyfu Pobl’, amongst others, and has been teaching courses at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre for seven years.  He has a particular interest in polyculture and the encouragement of biodiversity, and had an article published on the subject in the RSPB magazine.

The course is suitable for anyone aged 16 or over.

Workshop Fee: £30 for one session and £50 for both Vegetable Seed Sowing sessions

Please bring a packed lunch on the day. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided.
