Tutor: Claire Ward

drawn to paint nature

Nature is a rich source of challenging and beautiful things to paint and these one day workshops are an introduction into observing and recording nature’s details in pencils, pen and watercolours.

Workshops will take place quarterly, through the seasons to discover how to capture the translucence of a petal, the shine of a leaf or the texture of a feather. You will learn how to create realistic 3D effects in your work and also use some different techniques with other media. There will be demonstrations to watch and one to one help to guide you along.

The tutor is Claire Ward who is a local artist and a member of the Society of Botanical Artists.

Any skill level is welcome just the enthusiasm to record nature is essential; although previous drawing and sketching would be an advantage.

Materials: There will be a list of materials needed given out upon booking and if you have anything in particular you would like to paint, bring it along and receive guidance. Claire will have a variety of materials (including paper) which you can buy directly from her on the day.

The course of workshops will start in January, where we will look into different ways of depicting winter subjects like lichens, shiny leaves and bark using a variety of techniques and media.

April’s workshop will look into painting subjects like spring flowers, ferns and eggs in watercolours.

A summer workshop in July will concentrate on our wild flowers and their pollinators and also look into adding backgrounds to your work.

The final session will take place in October and will focus on depicting autumn’s harvest and feathers realistically in a variety of media.

The workshops can be booked individually or as a whole course with online help available.

Early Bird Fee: £35 for one workshop, £60 for two and £100 for four.

Standard Fee: (if booked within 2 weeks of workshop date) £40 for one workshop
