
During this course you will learn to identify a range of British butterflies, discuss and discover different habitats that butterflies inhabit and identify plants that different species of butterflies utilize.

1 Observe and identify a range of Lepidoptera (butterflies)
2 Use identification guides and other publications
3 Use the correct terminology
4 Observe and study the behavioral patterns (flight, feeding and breeding behaviors)
5 Visit a range of diverse habitats
6 Link occurrence to habitat preferences, food plants of larvae and adults
7 Study the ecology of various species
8 Develop and use field observation skills
9 Recording observations
This is a Aberystwyth University Lifelong Learning course and is a blended learning module so will involve both online and in-person teaching. The online section of the module, which starts the 15th of May and ends the 26th of June 2025, is delivered via Blackboard, our online learning environment. There will be teams meetings/presentations and information for you to read in your own time. Your tutor will provide online support for the duration of the course.
The in-person teaching will take place at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre on Saturday 31st of May 2025, from 10-4pm.
This module can be studied as a stand-alone course but it is also a key module for the Certificate of Higher Education in Field Ecology at Aberystwyth University.
The assessments are:
-Field notebook (20%)
-Written identification test (20%)
-Portfolio of species and habitats (60%) (based on observations, identifications and information drawn from field work, further tasks and research) (1800 word equivalent).
Tutor: Ryan Knight-Fox is an experienced tutor, having been running his own woodland business Knight-Fox Wild About Learning since 2017. He is an Ecologist, teacher of Wildlife Identification & Tracking, Ethnobotanist, Bushcraft Instructor, Social Forester, Forest School Leader and Coastal School Leader. Ryan is also the Nature Reserve & Volunteer Manager at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre.
