Some months ago I announced the launch of Craft and Cake: an initiative to raise funds for Denmark Farm. A group of us meet regularly to get creative, making beautiful objects to raffle off later this year. So far our endeavours have focused on knitting and crochet and we have had donations of yarn as well as completed squares and hexagons to put together into some beautiful blankets. Now that we’ve collected a whole heap of pieces, Lindsey is edging the squares and stitching them together to create some amazing blankets: currently one with traditional granny squares, edged in black, and one that’s much more varied and edged in white. She has plans for cushion covers too! In addition, I have edged a whole load of donated hexagons and Sue and Denise are sewing these together into an amazing lap blanket that I will add a colourful border to once it’s all in one piece:
All of theses beautiful things will be raffled off in the autumn. But, this project is about so much more than simply working with our hands… in addition, we come together to share food (usually cake, but on a recent evening cawl), to exchange ideas, to tell stories and, importantly, to spend time at Denmark Farm.
It’s not cheap to run and maintain a 40-acre nature reserve and even with the income from camping, guests in the ecolodge, courses and donations, we still need to raise more money to keep the place going. However, we know that a place like Denmark Farm is not valued unless people come to visit, whether that’s by coming to learn a new skill, strolling through the wildflower meadows on a summer afternoon, watching the bats flit across the site in the twilight or sharing some wonderful baking and a cuppa over a spot of knitting. We want Denmark Farm to be part of the community and the community to be part of Denmark Farm and so we need everyone’s support.
So, why not join us for some crafty activity? It’s a rather novel way of being a Denmark Farm volunteer! Our next session is on Thursday 14 August, 2-4pm. Bring cake, yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks and come and contribute to our community work of craft. We also ask everyone for a donation (small or large) to cover our costs and help towards running this beautiful site. Everyone is welcome.
In addition, we’ve got an upcycling sale coming up on Saturday 20 September; this will run at the same time as the usual cake and craft session and will be a great opportunity to donate unwanted items to support the work of Denmark Farm and to find some bargains.
