Carving out the future for Wildlife Where you Live

Benches-Carving-Oct-2010-013
WWYL carving workshop

Our Big Lottery funded ‘Wildlife Where You Live’ project reaches its grand finale in 2013, but there is still plenty to get involved in.

Our 12 communities clocked up an impressive 25 nature activities in Autumn,  from a fungal forays and bat evenings, to nature-themed bench carving workshops at Denmark Farm.

We have an exciting programme planned for the next few months. Learn crafts such as wood-carving and mosaic-making, or take part in outdoor nature walks and conservation days.

Make space for wildlife in schools by helping to create bird-boxes and bug hotels.  In Spring, don your wellies, grab a trowel, and come along to help us plant up beds, borders and boxes with wildlife-friendly plants at various locations across Ceredigion.

Here are just a few dates for your diaries:

Wed 23 Jan (11 am – 12.30 am) Borth “Rockpool ramble”. Meet at the car park by the lifeboat station (booking not required).

Sat 26 Jan (11am – 12.30)   Aberarth Otter walk with Dr Jenny Macpherson of the Vincent Wildlife Trust, looking for signs of otters. Meet at Aberarth community hall (booking not required).

Fri and Sat 15 and 16 February: Create wood-carvings for Bont, Llanafan and Tregaron in Pontrhydfendigaid village hall. These will be used to display information about our wildlife projects in these 3 communities. ADVANCE BOOKINGS ONLY (info@denmarkfarm.org.uk)

Sunday 24 February (10 am – 4 pm): Conservation work day in Llanafan (trail clearance, hedge-planting etc). ADVANCE BOOKINGS ONLY (info@denmarkfarm.org.uk)

Sat and Sun 2 and 3 March (10 am – 4 pm): Create wood-carvings for Cellan and Llangybi in Cellan Millenium hall. ADVANCE BOOKINGS ONLY.

WWYL coppicing workshop
WWYL coppicing workshop

Watch out for our posters, emails, and future blogs (subscribe on our website if you haven’t already), to keep up to date with other WWYL activities. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

All sessions are FREE to take part in, require no previous experience, and are a great opportunity to gain skills and inspiration for helping the wildlife in your own community.

There will be plenty happening at Denmark Farm too. We’ve already started our community garden re-design with a coppicing training day. Several hardy souls braved a chilly and grey day to learn why and how to coppice, and about the various uses of the coppiced materials. Why not come along to our next Volunteer Day on 26 January to get involved in other projects both in the garden and around our 40 acre site?

If all this isn’t enough, we have a Visions of Nature workshop on 16 April, followed by our Spring Forum at Denmark Farm on April 17 (contact us to book places). These will provide a stimulating mix of talks and activities, with an opportunity to create and share plans for a wildlife-friendly future! And finally, on Sunday 16 June, we will have our Open Day at Denmark Farm, with lots of wildlife activities, and ideas for making your own area more wildlife-friendly and sustainable.

For more information about any of our WWYL activities, please get in touch . Sadly, the project ends on 30 June 2013 but, before this, every WWYL community will host an event to celebrate their achievements and think about their next steps. There will be wildlife activities, story-telling, and displays of WWYL activities. Coming soon to a village hall near you!
